Argentina offers a
myriad of experiences to both the discerning
traveller as well as the new tourist. The country is divided into 6
distinct tourist regions - Litoral, Norte, Cuyo, Patagonia, Cordoba and
Buenos Aires - each with its own special flavor.
Litoral:
Home to the celebrated Iguaz falls, it is a tropical land of large
rivers, red earth, magnificent virgin forests full of huge trees and
extraordinary flora and fauna.
Must do: Sipping
the national drink of Argentina – mat, made from the leaves of the
yerba mate plant and brewed like tea.
Norte:
Norte is, as its name suggests, composed of the arid and mountainous
northern provinces where the remnants of Argentine history can be found
in pre-Columbian relics as well as ruins dating from the period of
Colonization.
Must do:
Basking in one of the many thermal spas in the region, including Termas
de Ro Hondo in Santiago del Estero and Aguas Calientes in Jujuy.
Cuyo:
This “desert country” as it is called in the native Indian language -
is the region of the high peaks, the snow-covered volcanoes, and the
large wilderness spreading from the Andes mountain range and foothills
to the steppe.
Must do:
Sampling wine in the provinces of Mendoza, La Rioja and San Juan, where
some of the best wines in Argentina are produced.
Patagonia:
This snow covered winter wonderland is the doorway to the Argentine
Antarctic. Patagonia is home to the Perito Moreno glacier, to the
largest colony of Magellanic penguins and to the southernmost city in
the world – Ushuaia.
Must do:
Take the “Train to the End of the World”, the southernmost functioning
railroad system and get a first hand view of this ancient land.
Crdoba:
The colonial relics of Argentina’s past, beautifully preserved can be
found in the 17th and 18th century ranches and chapels in this region,
arguably the most important economic centre of the country after Buenos
Aires. The many mountains, nature trails and lagoons are a treat for
the nature lover and the thrill seeker alike.
Must do:
Ride a hot air balloon over the Sierras Chicas, or go horseback riding
on one of the many mountain trails.
Buenos Aires: The
cultural heart of Argentina is also a cultural melting pot, influenced
by various immigrant populations, from the Spaniards to the Italians.
This is a megalopolis which still retains an old world charm in its
many
quaint barrios, or neighbourhoods, each with its own distinct character.
Must do: Watch
an open air tango performance in the neighbourhood of La Boca, where it
all began. Or better still, participate in one yourself.
